MITTI KE RANG

MITTI KE RANG
DUNIYA BADAL GAYI...
INSAAN BADAL GAYE...
BADLE NAHIN KABHI YEH..
MITTI KE RANG, MITTI KE RANG...
Sound familiar no!!Yeah you are bang on..Its the same old doordarshan serial which we all who were born two decades back grew up watching..
Those were the days of no zooming in and out of cameras..Protagonist in the serials used to wear very "humanly"attire..Never did we felt the need of being a rocket scientist to understand the scheming and plotting by ultra-sexy backless blouses clad vamps..In those days if a household was shown poor,it never meant that they will have 4bhk apartment. It just meant a poor family having hand-to-mouth existence and struggling to make ends meet..
But why am I comparing all those good old serials to the crap we have on our idiot box today.. coz I catched an episode of "Mitti ke rang" on doordarshan today!!And that too the episode which I used to love when I was a kid..
Its a story of a boy who is all alone this whole wide world..and he is now standing at the beach watching a happy family of four picnicking. And then the children from that family who are of the same age as his starts playing frisbee with him..Then they have lunch..mom-dad gave some food to him too..and then asks him to wash their dishes in the waves of sea..and then mom counts the dishes..and she founds out there is one steel spoon missing..They accuse him of stealing that SPOON..Crowd gathers and start beating the boy just for a spoon..Family hurles abuses on the boy, sits in the car and goes back to home..At home mom finds the spoon cornered in the picnic basket!!
Without any added camera effects and background scores doordarshan serials used to comment on our lives..There were so many each from different genre and each reflecting a different persona..Rajni,Malgudi Days,Gul Gulshan Gulfam,Tamas,Hum Log,Buniyad,Sanjha Chulha,Potli wala baba, neem ka ped,The Discovery Of India,Yeh Jo Hai Jindagi,Challenge The Master and many more..
Ahh..I used to love them..I wish I could watch them all over again..Need to find the dvd..I've seen some Dvds in I guess Planet M..I'll definitely buy those when I can afford them..Till then I'll keep blogging about and keep the memories alive!! :)

I used to watch Buniyad, Potli wala baba and Malgudi days. More than these I also loved the Sundays when we got to watch Rangoli, TnJ, He-man, Tale Spin and Duck Tales. I just loved them and miss them. Your post was quite nostlagic, it took me back too for a while.

@ Parv and Rads..
yeah those were the days when talent ruled.I miss those shows..I think doordarshan should re-run the shows..
And yeah I also remeber getting up early on sundays to watch rangoli and all those kiddo thingies!

I have quite hazy memories when it comes to movies, music & TV serials. I can't recall any of the serials u mentioned apart from The Malgudi Days. The other reason may be i was never a TV serial freak except in a period when Sony TV ran the the serials like Bewitched, Three Stooges etc back to back with minimum commercials.
Well when it comes to Doordarshan i can still remember excellent serials like Vyomkesh Bakshi, Tenali Raman's series. Wow those serials still remain my favourites till date. I would love to have DVDs covering series of serials like Vyomkesh Bakshi, Surbhi (another favourite), Akbar Birbal etc.

Hope entertainment industry will come up with these DVD's in the future & i will able to enjoy them with my children.

@ Pushkar
some of the DVDs are available in the leading music stores ,if u want to buy..
Me too remember the sony era, when they dubbed the serials in hindi.Me and my bro used to cut short our play timings to adjust Bewitched and I dream of genie as its timings were I think 5-ish in evenings..
And I had a crush on Vyomkesh Bakshi..He was so intelligent :P Those days when someone asked me "wht will u do when u grow up?"
I always replied "I'll assist Vyomkesh Bakshi" lol

Yeah, Mitti ke Rang was a good serial. Some of the stories were really touching.

One of the old serials that I used to love watching was "Vyomkesh Bakshi"

I recently saw some of the old episodes on CD...Memories came flooding back!

First time here, reached here through indiblogger.

Well, I do remember this particular episode. Nobody, except the janta that grew up in that DD era (when this cable sin was not there) would be able to feel this. Indeed a masterpiece!

@ Nischaya
thnx 4 dropping by..I htink u r totally totally right in calling Satellite TV a sin..
I definitely second u on that!

I remember this serial and believe it or not, me and my office friend were only discussing this 4 days back!!!

we also recollected the noon time serials Itihias, Waqt, the Multi Lingual song "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara", the Mowgli, The Knight Rider that used to come in the night at 9pm.

Then there was Byomkesh Bakshi, the story which can now be found on YouTube. You can navigate it from here on to see the complete series...

Hi.. I think the changing face of the television purely reflects the changing times.

Yes, Mitti ke rang, buniyaad, hum log were classics! No denying this fact-but one needs to keep in mind the socio-economic factors governing life at that point of time.

We have good content even today. And the reason why the sleeveless blouse clad vamps were successful and ruled the television space for 8 years was because people used to watch them!!

It's a classic case of coming of age of the broadcast platform.

If you watch any of the old serials like hum log, dekh bhai dekh, the initial euphoria might not last for more than two/three episodes..

preposterous girl said...

Hi Mayank..
First of all welcome to my blog..
But I beg to differ here..I cant see much of content in today's television scenario.Plz let me knw if I'm missing something..
And dnt knw abt others but for me all the episodes of hum log, dekh bhai dekh etc are equally entertaining..i never get bored of those episodes..

Im feeling soooo amazing knowing that Im not the only one in the entire world to feel sooo nostalgic about those good old Doordarshan days...one of our teacher in my secondary school, Dasare Sir acted in one episode of Mitti Ke Rang...He had that Munimji's role in which the young girl is learning classical dance...I dont remember all of the episode now, but certainly it was best of the packs...

Nyhow, u can find the DvDs in Doordarshan delhi or mumbai studios...

do keep writing about those serials, especially the ones like - Mr. and Mrs. Wagle, Mr. Yogi, Guntur ki kathayein(or Amarawati Ki Kathayein), Neem Ka Ped, and also some old commercials...

Thank you very much for ur post.

Hi, this is really very nice to remember those golden days in such a good way. thanks preposterous girl!Today in the era of so many things to enjoy, we still feel something is 'missing'. So, preposterous girl rightly wished to live that time again. Although, TV gives so many serials today but the quality & creativity is absolutely missing. Today, which serial is not related to Saas-Bahu drama or unrealistic methods adopted to allure more n more viewers? NONE. So, thanks again preposterous girl! for reminding that real TIME.

It was a great episode, t was hardly 5-6 year old at that time but still that poor boy image fixed in my mind,if this was the same story or another one in which there was a boy who used to show some magic and sing"pate ki bhukh buri hai bhaiya, kaise tumhe samjhaon.......chota jadugar kehlaoon , mein chota jadugar kehlaon.

Hi, Thanks a lot for posting, however by any chance do you know the serial's name, where son of deceased post man starts distributing his letters after 3-4 years after postman dies. And each letter distributed lead to a new story. two of which I remember is , A family with 2 son, where letter is received by the elder son, letter was by a maid, who says she will come and get his child. Now son's are confused as to who is the son of the maid. And why did their parents lied it to them. Then they lately discovers that, she already took back her son long back :). If you know the name of the serial do share @ shutter.duniya@gmail.com www.shutterduniya.com

I remember watching this particular segment of "Mitti kay Rang" on Doordarshan with my parents when i was a kid. These TV shows used to be very much realistic and used to portray the real face of our society unlike the garbage which is currently being dished out in the TV serials today.

Mitti Ke Rang was (or should I say is and will be) one of the best TV shows on earth. Absolutely no denying of the fact. All the characters and the stories touched every heart and mind. All are moved by the characters and the portrayals.

Also, this serial (like many other DD serials of the late 1980s and early 1990s) had characters which were very close to the nature and all the episodes essentially showed the people, socitey, culture, everyday life, emotions, sentiments and the very essence of India itself which in turn were portrayed by strong, powerful yet simple and innocent performance by those days actors.

Those old days will never come back. I was born in 1982 and all I could say is: all these DD programs and serials between 1987-1995) are just like an integral part of my life (and our lives) till my death and I am afraid this legacy might die (Hope it does not)after our generation.

Because you know, there is such a huge difference between those days and the present days phenomena( in terms of people, society, education, families, friends, TV series, lifestyle, perceptions and other aspects of life)

Love to all of the friends who posted above :)

Was searching for info on Seahawks and came onto this blog. Brought back the golden memories of DD. I vividly remember this episode of Mitti ke rang. One actually felt very sorry for the lonely boy. The episode also showed him in happier times when his father would make him exercise. Would like to know the various blogs specifically dedicated to DD shows.

Hi all. I hav such fond memories of those times. I can ruminate about dem for hours. My mummy, my papa, & me - we all used to relax & see these serials. I guess, more than the serials, it's the memories of those times attached to these serials that make us so nostalgic. A phase of life, pure gold, gone by.

Nice one.. I'd also like to mention another serial with similar short stories like Mitti Ke Rang.. "Afsaane".. about a guy who finds out his postman uncle hasn't delivered letters for a long time.. he takes it upon himself to deliver them.. and the chaos this causes when letters get delivered 10 years after they were written. Each episode is about a new letter. For the days when letter writing was the only form of communication, this serial made a big handicap well felt.
